Recently, I photographed Splatt Chapel, a beautifully restored Victorian chapel set within the peaceful countryside of rural Devon. Originally a chapel and schoolhouse, the property has been transformed into a striking holiday retreat that blends original character with modern luxury, creating a space that immediately stands out from more traditional holiday accommodation.
A Unique Chapel Conversion Full of Character
From a photography perspective, properties like Splatt Chapel are always fascinating to capture because there is personality in every direction you look. Vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, original architectural features and large open spaces all help create interiors that feel dramatic whilst still remaining warm and welcoming.
The open-plan kitchen and dining space particularly stood out during the shoot, with natural light pouring through the large patio doors and highlighting the scale of the former chapel building beautifully. Upstairs, the lounge area offered a completely different atmosphere, with countryside views, exposed timberwork and a wood burner helping create a cosy contrast to the spacious rooms below.
